Chapter 17
Jessica & Franny
The Zion Compound
December 17
âNot long now,â Jace chortled as they crested another ridge. âLess than an hour and weâll be home and I can be with my wife and the youngâuns.â
For the first time since the ride had begun, Franny spoke up, âWhatâs going to happen to me now?â
âOnce we arrive, weâll take you to the womenâs house and be done with you, and I canât say Iâll be sorry. Youâve been nothing but trouble. As it is, Iâm not sure if Iâll get another wife out of the deal, or not. Of course, you wonât meet the Prophet yet. No siree.â
âThatâs right,â Porter sneered. âEmma will clean you up, teach you how to speak to the Prophet, and get you dressed up like a godly woman. I hope she does something with that hair of yours so you wonât be flaunting it around us men like some prostitute, trying to tempt us with your evil ways.â
Franny kept her mouth shut, but in her heart she prayed for deliverance from these men and the fate that seemed to await her.
Oh God, where are my mom and dad? I canât believe no oneâs out there looking for me. Please, God, help them find me and get me out of this mess. I promise Iâll do better. Iâm sorry I shot that woman on the highway. I would take it back if I could.
Franny stopped praying and looked around, hoping somehow her parents would show up and stop Jace from taking her to this prophet they kept talking about. With no help in sight, she sighed, but she still had a niggling feeling someone was watching them. A feeling deep in her gut told her to not give up.
Jace interrupted her thoughts as he burst out with enthusiasm, âThere it is! Weâre almost there!â
Ahead, as the horses worked their way up a rise, she could see some kind of tower, and then at the top of the hill she realized why Jace was so excited. They gazed down into a small valley. In front of them was a fenced community. There were two double rows of manufactured homes with solar panels on the roofs, and a two-lane gravel road running between them. At the far end was a large building that seemed to be a church or auditorium and several other small buildings that looked like businesses or storage of some kind. The place was full of older cars and machines, left to rust and decay. Piles of construction materials were scattered throughout the compound, giving the place a disorganized look, like a low rent mobile home park.
âThatâs it,â Jace said, beaming with pride. âThatâs Zion City, home of the Prophet and his people.â
âThis hereâs your new home, girl,â Porter sneered. âYour wild ways have caught up with you and now youâre here. Youâd better hope you can redeem yourself and not be a temptress anymore. If not, youâll be sorry for sure.â
âRight,â Jace said, âEnough gawking; letâs get home.
